Law Seeks to Better Track Employers Relying on Medicaid

LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska state Senator Jeremy Nordquist introduced a law today that will allow the Legislature and the public to better track businesses who employ many people on the Medicaid rolls. The bill, LB 790, requires HHS to produce a report listing all businesses in the state which employ ten or more people receiving Medicaid benefits.

“Medicaid was not intended to serve as a long-term alternative to private insurance for employed Nebraskans, and our state’s taxpayers shouldn’t have to continue to pick up the tab,” said Nordquist. “We need to work with business leaders to find a way to help them move their employees to private insurance and reduce the burden on Nebraska taxpayers. It’s my hope that this annual report will help move this issue to the forefront and increase awareness of this problem.”

Last year, Senator Nordquist requested a list of employers with more than 25 employees receiving Medicaid benefits. That report showed a 229% increase from a similar report issued just four years earlier.
